We hear these questions from people who have recently gone plant-based. Many of us grew up eating these foods in one way or another, but now we question whether they fit within the definition of a “vegan” diet.

To answer those questions, we need first to define what it means for a food item to be “vegan” and then look at each of those items specifically. Based on my research into various dictionaries and other sources online as well as from books I own on the subject, there seems to be a core definition of veganism that is generally accepted:
Definition Of Veganism
Veganism is the practice of abstaining from consuming any animal products. A vegan diet is one type of plant-based diet. A vegan diet has these things in common: meat, fish, eggs, cheese, and milk all come from animals-so they are not consumed on a vegan diet. In other words, a vegan diet excludes anything made by or derived from an animal- so while this includes meat and fish, it also contains eggs or dairy from animals.
For some people, that means not eating any foods derived from animals; for others, it can mean wearing clothes made from synthetic fibers instead of leather or wool; still, others avoid using cosmetics tested on animals. Some even go so far as to eschew other non-food items from animals, like honey or beeswax.
